Oftentimes we overlook the small things in relationships, and focus only on the big ticket items. When the small things are good, we take them for granted and forget to say thank you. When the small things are irritating, we ignore them, and they become larger issues.

Think of a time when someone gave you a small gift, and you were expecting something totally different. What was your response? Were you able to give them your best fake smile, while murmuring under your breath? Or were you grateful for the small things?

Now, focus on a time when you were holding a conversation with a friend, and she was popping her chewing gum between every other word. Although it frustrated you to the greatest degree of frustration, you allowed her to continue doing it, without addressing the issue. Small things do matter!!! It is important to address small issues when they frustrate you, because it helps to keep your relationships healthy. You should also celebrate small things that are positive. People like to know that they are appreciated, and you should make every attempt to celebrate them when they do small things. Small things do matter!!!

One of my students gave me a beautiful bracelet with the word “faith” on it. I love the bracelet, and wore it a couple of times. On yesterday, this student became upset when he saw me wearing a bracelet that someone else gave me. I quickly realized that although it was something small to me, it really mattered to him. Small things do matter!!!

Therefore, the first thing I did while getting dressed today, was put his bracelet on. Why did I wear his bracelet today? Because I learned a very valuable lesson. Small things do matter!!!

Here are 10 tidbits to consider about small things:

Enjoy the small things as though they were large things.
